Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is a mountainside zoo to the Southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The zoo, which is located 6,800 feet (2,100 meters) above sea level is the only mountainside zoo in the United States. The zoo covers an area of 140 acres (57 hectares), of which 40 acres (16 hectares) is currently in use, and is home to 750 animals representing about 150 different species. The zoo is particularly known for its sizable herd of reticulated giraffes, and its successful breeding program for these giraffes.

The exhibits at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo include:
  • African Rift Valley - This exhibit is home to the zoo's reticulated giraffe herd, as well as a variety of other African animals including African lions, black-and-white colobus, Cape vultures, crowned crane, Grant's zebra, meerkats, okapi, and Red river hogs. Guests are able to feed the giraffes for a fee.

  • Asian Highlands - This exhibit is based on the architecture of a Himalayan monastry, and is home to Amur leopards, Amur tigers, Pallas' cats, and snow leopards.

  • Aquatics - As well as housing amphibian and fish in a variety of aquariums, this exhibit is also home to African penguins, beavers, Burmese pythons, and Nile hippopotamuses.

  • Australia Walkabout - Newly renovated in 2015, this exhibit features American alligators, emus, Matschie's tree kangaroo, parakeets, and red-necked wallabies. Unique features of this exhibit include the option for visitors to hand-feed birds using seed sticks, and the ability to walk inside the red-necked wallabies exhibit.

  • Bear Grottos - Home to Asiatic black bears and spectacled bears.

  • Encounter Africa - Another new exhibit, Encounter Africa opened in 2013. Visitors can see African elephants, African lions, black rhinoceros, and meerkats. A sky bridge also gives a unique panoramic view of the city of Colorado Springs.

  • Monkey Pavilion - Home to many smaller primates and other mammal species. The animals live in both indoor and outdoor exhibits.

  • My Big Backyard - See chickens, goats, koi, and rabbits.

  • Primate World - Home to many larger primates. This exhibit houses orangutans, siamangs, Western lowland gorillas, and naked mole rats.

  • Rocky Cliffs - A habitat for mountaingoats.

  • Rocky Mountain Wild - Colorado wildlife in a natural setting. This exhibit features bald eagles, Canada lynx, grizzly bears, Mexican gray wolf, moose, mountain lions, and river otters.

  • Scutes Family Gallery - A modern art gallery that is also home to 40 species of reptiles.

  • The Loft - A kid-friendly area that teaches children what is involved in caring for animals at the zoo.
As well as these exhibits, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo also is home to a carousel (first installed in 1937 and at the center of the zoo), an open-air chairlift ride that takes guests over the Amur tiger, Grizzly bear, and mountain goat exhibits ("Mountaineer Sky Ride". Additionally, weather-permitting, admission to the zoo also includes admission to the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun.
